Radfahrer in München im Winter / Winter cyclists

Es war ein langer Winter hier in München und es ist kein Ende in Sicht. Wir hatten am Heiligabend fast 20 Grad, aber 2013 war zeitweise extrem eisig und es hat immer wieder und oft stark geschneit.

Erstens, möchte ich sagen, dass diejenigen, die bei diesem Winterwetter Rad fahren, irgendwie bewundernswert sind. Hut ab! Es ist aber sehr interessant zu beobachten, wie ruhig und zurückhaltend die (meisten) Radler sind, zu dieser Jahreszeit bzw. beim Winterwetter. Zu anderen Jahreszeiten, wenn kein Schnee liegt, darf man als Fußgänger nicht mal für eine Millisekunde auf einen Radweg ausweichen. Man wird oft laut beschimpft. Manchmal kommt es sogar zu Drohungen oder sogar zu Handgreiflichkeiten!

Im Winter sind die Radwege oft nicht so gut vom Schnee geräumt, wie die Fußwege. Es gibt natürlich viel mehr Fuß- als Radverkehr und die Gehwege sind deshalb oft sehr viel früher leichter befahrbar. Die Radler benutzen natürlich dann die Fußwege. Die meisten fahren rücksichtsvoll und nicht zu schnell, aber sie reagieren gar nicht freundlich wenn man gen Radweg zeigt oder winkt. Manchmal werden Sie sogar ziemlich cholerisch und aggressiv, wie im Sommer!

It’s been a long winter in Munich and there is no end in sight. On Christmas Eve it was 20 degrees Celsius, but 2013 has been bitterly cold at times and it has snowed frequently, often heavily.

Firstly, I would like to say that any cyclists out there in this weather are pretty admirable! Well done! It is however very interesting to observe that most cyclists are quiet and restrained at this time of year, in this wintery weather. At other times of year, when there is no snow, it is very risky for pedestrians to stray onto a cycle path, even for a millisecond. An earful of abuse is likely. Sometimes there are threats of or even actual violence!

In winter, the cycle paths are often not as clear as the pavements. Obviously there is more foot than cycle traffic and the pavements tend to be clearer much earlier. Of course, the cyclists then use the pavements. Most of them ride sensibly and not too fast, but they don’t react very cheerfully if you point or wave them towards the cycle path. Some really lose their temper, just like in summer!
